Why won’t these dark spots go away? The Refinery Medical Aesthetics

A few little dark spots across your nose and cheeks. When you were younger they were “cute”, right? Turns out dark spots in your 20’s and 30’s aren’t cute anymore. And they aren’t freckles. Dark spots on the face can be caused by different things, and are treated in different ways. Here’s a few of the most common causes:

  1. Melasma - I’ll do a whole post on this. “The mask of pregnancy”. Sometimes it can be improved easily, other times it can be quite stubborn.
  2. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation - pigmentation that occurs after an injury or inflammation of the skin. I.e. the darks spots you get after a pimple. Can be worse in those with darker skin.
  3. Solar lentigines - areas of pigment change due to sun exposure and photodamage.
  4. Ephelides - “freckles”, also appear when skin is exposed to the sun, but mostly genetic.

It’s important to know what type of hyperpigmentation you’re dealing with so you know how to treat it.

Treatment options include:

  1. Retinoids
  2. Lightening products
  3. Chemical peels
  4. Lasers

Hyperpigmentation can be one of the most frustrating skin concerns because it can be difficult to treat. But it can be one of the most rewarding! The before and after photos of a success story say it all.
